Technology vs. Those Who Need It (Fiftysix)
Most people who come to me don’t know how to say what they really want.
From my work as an advisor and consultant, the problem often lies beyond the solution - but bridging my client to what they’re actually trying to solve.
Often, they describe a symptom:
- “I need a website.”
- “Why should I invest in crypto?”
- “Run my social media.”
But the real problem is different. A deliverable helps achieve the problem, but doesn’t get the client entirely there. Which turns into more deliverables, and more time lost.
Through time, I recognized that the very thing people are asking for, or even searching through Google and ChatGPT for an answer, are actually incorrect in the first place.
Imagine a non-technical user asking ChatGPT how to build a website, only to phrase the context wrong, and be led down a path to install React and host a website locally. Now imagine this happening alongside every field you don’t know, and being fed not just wrong information, but a wrong pretense to seek that information. In fact, it’s often worse. Now, problems aren’t just about deliverables, but emotion, urgency, and fear.
Helping people doesn’t just mean building something for them. It’s helping them understand why something needs to be built in the first place. Instead of working against the technologies so wide-spread and known for information, I’m acting as a translator to help people understand how to use the very information base as it was created.
It involves a lot of listening, emotional intelligence, and lived experience. Often times, when I’m done, the reaction is: “I didn’t realize why I wanted this.”
This continuation is leading me to my current obsession: the intersection of emotional intelligence and AI.
Current tools — no matter how powerful — can’t understand tone, feel urgency, weigh personal values, or understand the unspoken strategy behind a request. It’s like extra AI context, but instead for the human writing the prompt.
By being the person who bridges the gap between my client and the technology they use, the result is a unique, personal solution that targets exactly what the person needs - not what they think they do.
